February 4: Events This Week
Feb. 4th, 2026 10:41 pmI’ve got my classes over for the week so now I can kinda coast into the end of the week. Comparatively at least. There’s still a lot to do but I think I can afford a little bit of resting.
A lot going on at work recently, very exciting stuff.
Yesterday, we had the pie eating contest, which was decently fun. I admit I do think the event used to be better, but I also know some of the circumstances of putting it together this year and in that context, it’s impressive. Last year they didn’t have it at all, so the institutional memory was about to slip away, especially with the originating Dean technically retired now. And the student who took it over this year did it impulsively and basically by herself, which is wild. So it was a bit simpler and there were some hitches but it happened, which is impressive. And it raised a lot of money, which is also good. A couple of professors got pied in the face at the end, and that brought some of the raucous, weird atmosphere of previous events. Professors can obviously bid way higher than students on something like that, which on the one hand felt weird, but on the other, it’s like… it’s for charity. And one of the winning professors was the wife of the one being pied, and the other winning administrator gave the pie throwing privileges to the elementary aged son of the woman who runs the cafe and that was very sweet. He was really into it.
Today, we got our new desktop staff-only scanner installed. It was quite a big operation, which for some reason I wasn’t expecting. It’s way nicer and fancier than our previous one (coincidentally also the one I used to scan stuff as my very first task at this library, aww). Looks sort of like a droid from Star Wars out of the corner of my eye when I pass by it. We’ve had the boxes for a while but the guy came to do the official installation today. I hung out a little to watch that, being nosy, and then I ended up staying for the training for no reason other than even more nosiness. Decently interesting though.
And tomorrow–I have to not forget this is happening because I keep forgetting–I’m meeting with my oral history student and we’re practicing equipment set up. I have not even thought about this equipment in like 3 months. And I’m the more experienced of the two of us with this stuff. I don’t know what I’m doing and people just trust me with stuff. Anyway, it’s the end of the day and very well might go right up to when I leave at 4:30. So that will probably be a lot. And the actual oral history is on Tuesday.
I definitely have unrealistic ideas about how next week will go but that’s also a problem for next week me. It’s one day at a time over here!
I’m hoping that maybe Friday I’ll be able to write a little. Hopefully not cursing myself by saying that.
