October 26: Creature from the Black Lagoon

Went to see Creature from the Black Lagoon with @riotsquirrrl today. It was a fun little movie. I wouldn’t say it was scary though it got me a few times with some of the (3D) jump scares, and I’m glad I saw it for the cultural references at least.

The two best parts were the creature itself and the 3D effects. I don’t even really like 3D movies so much and sometimes the effects didn’t even work for me, like, the shapes were more blurry than they were standing out. But when the 3D was doing something, like allowing fish to swim right at me, or the creature’s hand to come out of the screen, or the harpoons and stuff to jump from the screen (which once, embarrassingly, made me say “ah!” out loud) it made up for the rest. I was legitimately startled several times and other times felt like, oh, that’s cool! So it was a memorable part of the story.

I also really, really liked the creature. I liked the design of it, I liked the way the actors played him, and I was always most excited when he came on. He definitely didn’t do anything wrong and I am fully on the side of the creature. I mean, the scientists came to HIS house, where HE lives. I unfortunately could not stop laughing at the shots of him captured on their boat, looking up forlornly from inside the cage. I feel like that should be a reaction image for… something.

I also liked Kay’s vast assortment of cute outfits even though it was supremely annoying how she was there to be Smurfette: allegedly a scientist but one who never does any science and is basically just the Girl/Girlfriend. And I liked how often the two main male characters just wore short shorts and literally nothing else, even when they very well could have been wearing shirts. Who needs shirts?!

So, yes, I enjoyed it, I’m glad I had the opportunity to see it in real 3D in a theater, I don’t really anticipate ever needing to see it again, but it was still fun to do.
