June 19: Excerpt
Jun. 19th, 2025 09:15 pmMy main accomplishment today was doing some writing, and then a bit of cleaning and stuff, not overly much. Otherwise a lot of resting. But that’s okay, I’m proud of the writing! I started a fic I’ve been thinking about off and on for years, wrote for an hour, and got about 1500 words done. I suspect it’ll be lengthy… I suspect it’ll not have much of an audience. But I like it, and I’m making progress on my creative goals.
It’s a T100 fic, canon-divergent/alternate S2-S3 hiatus. Here’s an excerpt.
*
At the top of the gate and to the right is the largest of the observation stations, a covered rectangle that hovers above the wall. Two guards stand watch there, a man and woman both dressed in the same heavy black outfits, with padded coats. The uniform, she’s learned, of their warriors.
The man steps forward, to the edge of the deck, fully visible now beyond the overhang of its roof. He’s young, probably younger than Echo herself, with a set and serious expression as if despite his age he’s grown used to command. And she respects him for it. He calls down to her: “Who are you?”
“You’re speaking to Azgedakwin—” [name] barks out from her left, but she silences him with another short, dismissive gesture.
Instead she lifts her chin and answers, “Your leader knows who I am.” And after the slightest pause. “He met me in the Mountain.”
The expression of the Skaikru guard breaks before he can school it, and she notes the surprise there, the curiosity in the rise of his eyebrows and the downturn of his mouth. He doesn’t answer, but steps back to speak to the woman—another guard young enough Echo might call her a girl—and then she hears the clang of metal ringing beneath the weight of the guard’s feet as he climbs down, down behind the wall.
She waits patiently for some time at the gate. Unlike the rest of the wall, it is made of carefully cut and well-planed wooden planks, set between two large wooden pillars. Something of a hint in it of what the settlement might someday be.
